Message Text: AU Optronics has started mass producton of a 6-inch WQHD (2560x1440) Ultra High Resolution LCD panel for smartphones.

The company has adopted the AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) technology and LTPS production for the 6-inch WQHD LCD panel, which has a resolution as high as 2560x1440 at near 500 ppi (pixel per inch). In addition, its 0.9 mm bezel design expands the display active area to its largest and makes the smartphone lighter and more compact.

AUO has so far successfully gained market shares in China for mid-range and high-end smartphones and has also secured clients from global brands.

The Hsinchu-based company said that the first phones featuring the 2,560 x 1,440 panel was recently released into the Chinese market. Unconfirmed media reports have pointed to China's Vivo, which in December launched the Xplay 3S, an Android phone with the same resolution but packing a slightly larger display of 6.1 inches.

AUO said its display comes at a time when large-screen phones are gaining traction thanks to the upgrade to 4G cellular networks, allowing for faster consumption of high-definition content.

LG Display beat AUO last August, when it claimed it had created the world's first quad HD smartphone display. The LG display measures in at 5.5 inches, smaller than AUO's but coming in at the same 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution for a higher density of 538 ppi.
