LSI Logic and Seagate team to develop new SerialATA interface

LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) and Seagate Technology today announced that they will introduce the breakthrough Serial ATA interface in Seagate's next-generation desktop PC hard disc drives. LSI Logic's proven interconnect chip technology joins Seagate's drive-level Serial ATA developments to enable the first full-speed native Serial ATA hard drive solution, ready to integrate into products this year.
The evolutionary Serial ATA interface is expected to be fully adopted throughout the rest of the hard drive industry by the end of 2003. Seagate's Serial ATA hard drive technology was unveiled today in a demonstration at the Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco.
LSI Logic's Serial ATA core technology complies with the specifications set forth by the Serial ATA working group, and uses LSI Logic's widely-adopted and integrated GigaBlaze® gigabit per second serial transceiver core along with a link layer controller (LLC). The LLC provides the transport, link and physical layer interface functions as defined in the Serial ATA specification and will be offered by LSI Logic for both host and target ASIC applications.
