Message Text: Dropbox on Friday announced that it has acquired the email application Mailbox.

"After spending time with Gentry, Scott, and the team, it became clear that their calling was the same as ours at Dropbox to solve life's hidden problems and reimagine the things we do every day. We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a lot of pain," Dropbox says.

Dropbox says that Mailbox doesn't replace your email but it just " makes it better, simplifing your life."

The team behind Mailbox said that the app -- which delivers Gmail messages to the iPhone or iPod Touch -- will remain, but it needs a company like Dropbox to help it grow.

Dropbox has said it could become a Web powerhouse by adding features to its core storage function. For instance, the company has already added features to help upload and organize photos.
