OCZ is expected to release the first SSDs based on its new Barefoot 3 controller this fall.
During a conference call with financial analysts, OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen revealed that the Barefoot 3 controller is now in production at TSMC.
OCZ's currenty available "Indilinx Infused" SSDs such as the Octane, Vertex 4, and Agility 4 series feature a layer of proprietary firmware atop controller silicon from Marvell. The new SSDs coming in September will feature the new Indilinx controller chip, though.
The controller reportedly features a 32-bit, 400MHz "Aragon" processor with an SSD-specific RISC instruction set.
Petersen did not provide specifics related to the performance of the new controller, rather than mentioning a "significant performance increase over OCZ's current products."
