Message Text: Hitachi Displays, Ltd. today announced the development of a 4.5-inch full HD TFT IPS LCD display for smarphones. The company used amorphous silicon (Si) TFTs as driver elements.

The LCD module achives a high resolution (329ppi) that approaches the limits of the human eye, while also using newly developed technologies for high aperture ratio pixels and improved backlight efficiency in LCD displays to prevent the reduced brightness that occurs when desigining high-definition displays with superior color reproduction. As a result, even when amorphous Si TFTs are used as driver elements to improve resolution, brightness does not decrease much, the company said.
In February 2011, Hitachi Displays developed a 4.5-inch LCD panel with a pixel count of 720 x 1,280 by using low-temperature polycrystalline Si TFTs as driver elements. In response to the active demand for smartphones, the company developed an LCD panel having the same resolution by using amorphous Si TFTs, which makes the panel less expensive.

The display mode of the panel is based on the IPS method. It has a 70% color gamut on NTSC standards. Its view angle is 160° in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The brightness and contrast ratio of the panel are 500cd/m2 and 1,000:1, respectively.

Hitachi Displays will exhibit the panel at FPD International 2011, which will take place from Oct 26 to 28, 2011, in Yokohama, Japan.
