Message Text: LG Display said Monday that it has developed the world's thinnest LCD TV panel measuring just 2.6 millimeters.

The 42-inch panel weighs less than 4 kilograms and features a 120Hz refresh rate technology and a full HD (1920 by 1080) resolution.

The prototype panel features half the thickness of LG Display's previous thinnest prototype panel, a 5.9mm model that was unveiled in May, and much thinner than its current thinnest production panel, which is 11.9mm thin.

The Development of the new LCD panel was made possible by the use of an ultra-slim, edge-lit light emitting diode (LED) backlight system and proprietary optical film technology.

LG Display plans to showcase the product at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, scheduled for early 2010. It is unclear whether the company plans to mass produce the specific panel anytime soon. Currently, TV set makers have been shifting towards 3D technology, with Sony, Panasonic Samsung and LG to be ready to bring 3D to the home in 2010. LG has recently outlined its plans to introduce a wide range of 3D TVs ranging in size from 42- to 72-inches next year, following the 47-inch LCD 3D TV (47LH503D) this year. The company also plans to include 3D functionality in its flagship models for next year. The new series features an ultra-slim bezel which is expected to maximize the 3D effect. LG's 3D technology will also find its way into 150-inch projectors in the coming year.
