Message Text: Samsung said Sunday that it has developed the world's fastest graphics DRAM chip. The new 6 Gbps 512 MB GDDR5 can process graphics data twice as fast as existing chips.

DRAM chips are divided into general-purpose chips for personal computers, graphics chips for game consoles and mobile chips for handsets, with graphics DRAM the fastest and most expensive.

With 32 input and output channels (16Mb x 32), the new chip can process 24 gigabytes of data per second.

GDDR5 is expected to be used as a core component for next-generation game consoles or high-definition video devices.

Korea's largest electronics maker plans to begin mass-producing the chip in the first half of 2007.

A technical paper on Samsung's new 6Gbps graphics chip has been selected for presentation at ISSCC 2008.
