Message Text: JVC today announced the release of the first single-sided, dual layer DVD-RW discs, scheduled to reach the market in August.

The new erasable media offer a capacity of 8.5GB and are build upon the "DVD-RW for DL Ver.2.0" standard, approved by the DVD Forum last month.

The phase-change discs can be recorded at 2x (22.16 Mbps), and can be recorded approximately 1,000 times, according to the Japanese company.

JVC's new dual layer DVD-RW disc technology makes use of a new high sensitive recording film that allow high transmission performance and signal rewritability, and a new recording method, "N-Strategy", which enhances erasability. The high sensitive recording film and "N-Strategy" are based on JVC's proprietary phase-change design technology developed for high speed DVD-RW discs.

In addition, JVC used the JVC Intelligent disc Producing System (JIPS DL) manufacturing method for the new discs. JIPS DL is an inverse stacking manufacturing technology. Both L1 and L0 recording layers are each formed on a separate substrate, but use a different forming order. The recording sides formed on each recording layer are then bonded in an opposed fashion, separated by a space layer. The two recording layers are manufactured as separate processes prior to bonding, resulting in improved production efficiency and mass production capability using conventional manufacturing equipment.

The discs also come with a special hard coating for protection against scratches, dust, and dirt that interfere with disc reading or writing.

JVC also plans to release 8cm DVD-RW DL media soon. The currently available 12cm DVD-RW DL discs are expected to be available for approximately 1,400 Yen ($11.5).
