Message Text: South Korea's Samsung Electronics has said it would invest 1.9 billion dollars this year to expand its production capacity for computer memory chips.

The world's largest memory chipmaker said it would invest 990 billion won (1.05 billion dollars) in upgrading and expanding its existing memory chip facilities.

It also earmaked 819.8 billion won (872 million dollars) Monday for the construction of a new memory production line.

The company did not give details saying only that new investment would boost its competitive edge in the dynamic random access memory chip (DRAM) market.

The investment also reflects growing demand for memory chips, it said in a statement.
