Message Text: Playstation 3 will sell for around €500, revealed George Fornay, vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and President of Sony Computer Entertainment France on Thursday.

In a radio interview with France's Generation Europe 1, Fornay said that the price of Sony's next generation console will settle between €499 and €599. He acknowledged this first sounded expensive, but considering the fact the PS3 will also be a Blu-ray compatible playback system, the price is reasonnable according to him.

He also confirmed that Sony's next generation console would be launched simultaneoulsy in November of this year, right before Christmas. He hinted the shipping date was not set in stone until the line of products was definitely ready, and that the worldwide shipping was a huge challenge for Sony.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 sells for $399 for the top version and $299 for the basic one in the U.S. which makes it €320 whith the current exchange rate. Yet the Xbox 360 is priced at &euros;399 throughout most of Europe.

So far, Nintendo has announced that the Revolution game console will debut under $300 when it is launched later this year, which will make Sony's PS3 pricing expected to be higher than $500 the most expensive next-generation game on the market in Europe and North America.

Later during the day, when the news of a pricing for PS3 was published everywhere, Sony responded that the idea that Fornay mentionned a price ranges is "a mistranslation or misunderstanding of the discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Bluray Disc player," SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples told Gameindustry.biz.

"Mr Fornay explained that, with BD and HD functionality, PS3 at this price would be cheap for such functionality, but that current video games machines were significantly below this price," Sharples told the web site.

"He summarized by saying that PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below €500, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside," he concluded.
