Message Text: The RW Products Promotion Initiative (RWPPI) will hold its third Taiwanese Round-Robin Test Seminar in Taipei, Taiwan, on February 23, 2006. The Seminar will commence at 2:30 p.m. at the Grand Formosa Regent Taipei (VIP rooms 5, 6, and 7).

Picking up from the previous seminar at Computex Taipei in June 2005, this seminar will call on more Taiwanese manufacturers to participate in compatibility testing by demonstrating the activities and benefits of RWPPI round-robin tests in Taiwan, which is experiencing growth both as a market for and a supplier of DVD-RW/DVD-R format products.

The planned agenda includes general details of round-robin test activities, centering on reports on the test results of RRT Stage 5, which was conducted between June 2005 and January 2006, and plans for upcoming tests. The seminar will also feature a presentation of the activities and work of the RWPPI, the parent organization promoting the round-robin tests.

The following is a summary of the testing activities and results from RRT Stage 5, in which a total of 49 companies took part:

(1) Tests consisting of 125 items related to the physical recording characteristics of DVD-RW/DVD-R discs and compatible writers were conducted on 37 models of discs from 25 manufacturers and 13 models of writers from 12 manufacturers. The tests verified that the participants were ensuring stable recording quality.

(2) Logical compatibility tests consisting of 170 items related to DVD-RW/DVD-R compatible writers were conducted on 12 models from 12 companies. The tests verified the recording and playback compatibility between the participating models and, at the same time, were able to further the participating members' mutual understanding of the standards.

(3) Tests consisting of 15 items related to the recording, playback, and editing functions (in video mode: NTSC/PAL, and VR mode: NTSC) of DVD-RW/DVD-R compatible recorders, camcorder and computer authoring software were performed on 19 models from 12 companies. The tests confirmed a high degree of compatibility across the 15 items.

(4) Playback compatibility evaluations consisting of five items related to DVD-RW/DVD-R compatible players, drives, and computer playback software using the discs recorded in part (3) above were performed on 45 models from 22 companies. The tests verified playback compatibility over a broad range of conditions.

Furthermore, discussions between participating members led to a deeper mutual understanding about the evaluation criteria of the test items.

For this Taiwan Seminar, Mr. Gordon Yeh (CEO of RITEK Corporation and), the Chairman of TRIA (The Taiwan Recording-Media Industries Association) made the speech. "With the ever expanding DVD market, the importance of compatibility between optical storage discs and recordable & playback devices have become one major point of concern. This is the third RWPPI Round Robin Test Seminar to be held in Taiwan, and in terms of the related industries involved in these activities as a whole, we hold the meeting with the cooperation from TRIA. Through the opportunity in holding this meeting, we hope even more companies may join on to these activities."

By encouraging the participation of more corporations from Taiwan, a major supplier to the future recordable-DVD market, RWPPI hopes to make an active contribution to the development and growth of the overall DVD market through further improvement in the recording and playback compatibility between DVD-RW/DVD-R devices. RWPPI will also continue the current joint compatibility tests for new media formats as they are developed.
