Message Text: Citing Taiwanese industry sources, Digitimes reports that the Taiwanese makers of ODDs may suffer from shortage of optical pick-up heads for their forthcoming Super-multi DVD burners.

The emerged shortage is due to the fact that the main Japanese manufacturers of laser diodes, a key component of PUHs, have not increased their production volume to meet increased demand for Super Multi DVD burners. Currently the procurement cost of a Super Multi PUH remains unchanged at US$13-14, despite the tight supply.

BenQ reportedly worries about whether the short supply of PUHs will affect its shipments of Super Multi DVD burners next quarter. On the other hand, Lite-On indicated that its inventory of Super Multi PUHs has dropped to a severely low level but has not yet influenced delivery.
