Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola Inc. signed an agreement Friday to share patents for wireless communication technologies, Samsung said.
Motorola and Samsung, the world's second and third largest mobile phone manufacturers
respectively, will share patents in wireless communication-related technologies through
the agreement, Samsung said in a brief statement to the Korea Stock Exchange.
The South Korean company didn't provide further details about the agreement, including the
agreement's duration.
Samsung Electronics has not a commented on the financial aspects of the agreement.
According to a recent report by U.S.-based market research firm Gartner Inc., Samsung had
13.3 per cent of the global mobile phone market in the first quarter ended March 31,
behind Motorola's 16.8 per cent and market leader Nokia's 32 per cent.
Samsung has been under heavy earnings pressure due to an intensifying price war with its
two bigger rivals in the global market. |
