Leica Camera AG has now announced a date for its long-anticipated Digital-Modul-R to begin shipping.
Developed in cooperation with Kodak and Imacon, the device is a ten megapixel digital back for the Leica
R8 and R9 digital cameras. First announced back on June 26th, 2003, the Digital-Modul-R will finally reach
the market after a wait just shy of two years.
Leica's Mario Thurnherr, Manager of the Photo Division at the company, comments:
"The quality of the digital photographs taken with the LEICA DIGITAL-MODUL-R is even better than we
expected. The new product shows that Leica is able to puts its special strengths in optics and product
design into attractive, high-performance digital solutions. Our customers had to wait longer than planned
for the unique digital solution from Leica, but are now rewarded with an outstanding product."
When we were given a demonstration at the PMA show last spring, we were rather impressed by just how
quickly the Leica R-series cameras can be converted from film to the Digital-Modul-R. You can find a
number of high-quality pictures of the Digital-Modul-R on the Leica R9 camera in our PMA Leica Booth
Report, and can see video of the conversion process in our PMA Sneak Peek Video Report...
The Leica Digital-Modul-R is set to have street pricing of EUR 4500 in Germany. More information available at
