Premier Image Technology, the largest manufacturer of digital still cameras (DSCs) in Taiwan, began delivery of 8-megapixel models to channel clients in the US and Europe in February.
Premier is the first Taiwan-based maker to offer DSCs at this high a resolution, according to the company.
With this shipment demonstrating its technological capability, Premier hopes to obtain ODM orders from leading Japan-based brands, the company indicated. Premier expects to ship 300,000 8-megapixel DSCs this year, company chairman John Huang said at a press conference on February 16. Including its latest 8-megapixel models, Premier aims to deliver a total of six million DSCs in 2004, which would represent 50% growth over 2004, with 70% of these being 5-megapixel and higher resolution models, Huang noted. The company?s ODM clients for DSCs include Hewlett-Packard (HP), Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax.
In addition to DSCs, Premier expects shipments of its LCD projectors to grow from 40,000 units last year to 200,000 this year. Shipments of the company?s phone camera modules should increase from 5 million units in 2004 to 10 million in 2005, Huang indicated.
