Message Text: New solution provides compliant, high capacity, value-for-money archival storage for small professional archival environments

Melbourn, Herts 25th January 2005: Plasmon, (LSE: PLM), the market leader for professional data archival storage solutions, today announced the launch of the UDO Desktop Drive, a solution that provides compliant, high capacity and cost-effective archival storage for departmental and small office environments.

The UDO Desktop Drive supports both true Write Once and Rewritable UDO (Ultra Density Optical) media formats. 30GB UDO media is the first generation of high density, blue laser optical technology. It has been specifically designed for the secure long-term storage of valuable business information such as high volume emails and document images, customer records, audio or video files, financial information and design documentation.

With 30GB capacity, a single UDO cartridge can archive millions of text pages, more than 600,000 average size emails with attachments or in excess of 30,000 high-resolution photographs, which makes it ideal for a wide range of businesses. Companies benefiting from the capacity, performance and reliability of UDO Desktop Drives include accounting and legal firms, engineering and design offices, healthcare facilities and publishing houses.

?Since the launch of UDO over 12 months ago, increasing regulation and litigation has prompted organisations to ensure they protect their valuable knowledge assets for the long-term. Up to now, the available solutions have been too expensive or high capacity for many applications ? the UDO Desktop Drive addresses this need,? said Steve Tongish, marketing director EMEA at Plasmon Data. ?It?s a great solution for small businesses and departments that need professional archive storage on a limited budget.?

UDO true Write Once media provides unmatched data authenticity for regulatory compliance, best practice and audit purposes. It is the perfect solution for any application that requires data to be kept in an unalterable, non-erasable format. UDO Rewritable media is also available for archive environments that permit data deletion, enabling media capacity to be re-used.

Unlike magnetic storage media, UDO tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions and can be safely stored for years in a typical office environment. A highly stable Phase Change recording technology delivers media life in excess of 50 years, minimising the frequency of data migration and virtually eliminating media maintenance.

Engineered for demanding professional environments, the UDO Desktop Drive has been certified with very high-duty cycles that ensure reliable, long-term operation. The fast seek times and high read/write speeds have also been optimised for the unique performance requirements of a data archive.

The UDO Desktop Drive package includes a UDO Driver for Windows and Linux operating systems. In Windows environments the UDO Desktop Drive appears as a removable storage device, accessed via a normal drive letter. Management of the drive and media is performed through a standard Windows Explorer interface. Linux users benefit from the same transparent access, using a Command Line interface for administrative functions.

As archive needs evolve, Plasmon G-Series optical libraries ?Powered by UDO? provide a non-disruptive upgrade path to improve archive access and automate media management. The range of G-Series libraries accommodate virtually any archive requirement, with capacities from 720GB to over 19TB.

When writing to UDO media, operators can choose from two file system formats. UDF (1.02 / 1.5) is an industry standard supported by most major operating systems that enables the exchange of media and ensures future read compatibility. Where high-performance is critical or migration to libraries is planned, organisations can alternatively choose Plasmon's optimised Archive File System.
