Message Text: BOE HYDIS Technology, a high-end TFT-LCD maker in Korea, has created a mobile phone LCD which doubles the displays brightness without changing power consumption levels.

The newly-developed mobile LCD panel is a 2-inch QVGA display with brightness of 300 cd/mē, a contrast ratio of 500:1, and color representation of 45%.

According to the company, the technology incorporated into the panel provides the highest definition display in the industry while maintaining low power consumption, and it uses only half the power consumption other LCD manufacturers would need to reproduce the same definition.

This panel, using sub-pixel rendering technology, enhances brightness and transmission two-fold by adding white to the conventional RGB (red/green/blue) florescent substance to create an RGBW structure. In addition, an amorphous-silicon row driver (ARD), a gate drive IC built onto an LCD board, completes the display for a slim LCD with high brightness and contract ratio, and low power consumption.

BOE HYDIS expects that this technology can also be adapted to high-resolution, small-sized VGA TFT-LCD panels through application of the amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology without the requirement of additional facility investment.

"The brightness and slimness of these LCD panels with the combination of lower required power surpasses all other existing ones. These advantages will increase the product's market competitiveness, not to mention the benefit of reduced costs. In the future, we are planning to apply the panel to high-end mobile phone products like DMB phones, high resolution camera phones, and PMP displays," said Jung Yeal Lee, head of the R&D Center at BOE HYDIS.

Formerly a member of Hynix Semiconductor, BOE HYDIS was incorporated into China's BOE Technology Group Co Ltd in January 2003. The company is headquartered in Korea and has established a global network of sales and service offices in the US, Japan, Taiwan and China.
