Message Text: High definition television (HDTV) is now set to reach 7 percent of European homes by 2009, according to Intex Management Services Ltd. (Wellingborough, England), a marker research company.

IMS forecast that around 8 million HDTVs would be sold in Europe in 2009, accounting for almost 17 percent of all TVs sold in the region.

The prognosis for the deployment of HDTV in Europe has improved considerably in the last few months, according to Ian Weightman, senior vice president at IMS.

"We are forecasting that the number of European homes receiving digital TV will grow from around 47 million today, to 108 million in 2009," Weightman said in a statement. "In 2009, we predict that almost 14 million of these digital TV households will be receiving broadcast HD programming, which would represent around 7% of all European homes with a TV."
