According to DigiTimes, several second-tier Taiwan manufacturers of optical disc drives (ODDs) have shifted their production from PC-use ODDs to consumer optical disc devices,
or contracted out their PC-use ODD production, according to other Taiwan ODD makers.
These second-tier makers cannot compete in the increasingly competitive optical drive market, which includes international makers such as Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Sony, Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST), the makers indicated.
The leading Taiwan ODD makers that can compete with international brands are characterized by support from a large parent companies, affiliated business groups or are themselves a large corporation with diverse product lines. |
