Message Text: Sony Corp plans to start sample shipments of its key components used in Blu-ray disc (BD) player/recorders in early December 2004.

The five components include an optical pick-up head called the "KES-200A," an analog signal processing LSI "CXA2686R," a digital signal encoder/decoder LSI "CXD9807GG," a photodetector IC "CXA2700EM" and a blue-violet laser diode driver IC "CXA2691ER." Each sample is priced at 100,000 yen, 7,500 yen, 5,000 yen, 2,500 yen and 3,000 yen, respectively.

The company will provide the optical head embedded with the photodetector IC and the laser diode driver IC.

According to Sony, a BD player/recorder can be made by combining some other components such as a servo DSP, a system control microprocessor and a DRAM with these optical head, analog and digital signal processing LSIs. However, DVD and CD recording/playback requires other optical heads and signal processing LSIs, which support the formats.

The optical head and the LSIs are different from the one seen in the "BDZ-S77," Sony's BD recorder released in April 2003. For example, the size of the optical head in the BDZ-S77 is 81mm x 54.7mm x 29.9mm, while that of KES-200A is 92mm x 39mm x 23mm. The new head's volume, calculated by multiplying the dimensions, dropped about 38% from the previous one. They look different as well. The new one is capable of recording and playback of single-sided, dual-layer rewritable media. The distance between the objective lens and the disc (working distance) is 0.15mm and the weight is 50g.
