Australian Music Copyright Proposal to Benefit Consumers & Creators

A levy on blank recording media and digital players, would allow consumers the right to make backup copies of original CDs for personal use, including creating their own compilations on CD or tapes from original CDs or old vinyl records.

Currently, this is prohibited under Australian law, yet it has been successfully implemented in over 25 countries world wide. The proposal has been put forth by AustralAsian Music Industry Directory publisher Phil Tripp, who cites as an example its implementation in Canada, where in 2003, over AUS$40 million was collected.anthe benefits of such a scheme. Tripp, who has conducted meetings in Canberra with Parliamentarians and senior bureaucrats, intends to take the responses to government and lobby further for the changes to be implemented.
