DVD Forum adopts Toshiba-NEC format for new DVDs


The DVD Forum, a multinational industry association that promotes DVD-format specifications worldwide, has decided to adopt a new format created jointly by Toshiba Corp and NEC Corp for next-generation optical DVDs, industry sources said Thursday.

The decision will split DVD manufacturers into two groups because nine makers, including Sony Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, have already announced a different format outside the forum, the sources said.
