Oak Technology signs EDOM Technology for optical distribution channel in Taiwan and China

Oak Technology today announced its distribution agreement with EDOM Technology, a foremost distributor of electronic components in Taiwan and China.

Under terms of the agreement, EDOM will distribute Oak's optical storage products, targeting CD-RW and recordable DVD for the PC and consumer electronics markets in Taiwan and China. The partnership will also focus on the development and deployment of related technologies and standards, such as introducing a new generation of DVD-Recordable and CD-R/RW+DVD combo semiconductor-based solutions.

The explosive growth of digital audio, video and other portable digital media is driving demand for advanced CD-RW and recordable DVD capability in PC and consumer applications. According to market research firm IDC, the global production of CD-RW, Combo, and recordable DVD units in 2005 is estimated 85-million, 50-million, and 45-million units respectively.

Young Sohn, Chairman and CEO of Oak Technology stated, "EDOM is an exceptionally experienced, respected, and professional IC distributor. Through its excellent team and outstanding technical support in the Great China regions, we will be able to aggressively expand our distribution channels and more efficiently and broadly provide our innovative optical solutions to customers in Taiwan and China; centers of high optical growth and opportunity."

Wayne Tseng, Chairman of EDOM Technology, commented, "Taiwan and China are two major manufacturing regions of new-generation optical storage media. The demand in the market is soaring, and through our distribution of Oak's the state-of-the-art optical products and technologies we look forward to addressing and serving this market need and further expand Oak's dominance in optical storage."

Supporting the most popular optical media standards, Oak is developing advanced semiconductor solutions to allow new optical drives to support multi-optical media specifications, including DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW as well as CD-RW and CD+RW. Oak delivers system-on-a-chip (SOC) optical solutions for optimum optical drive performance and cost efficiency.
