Taipei 2001: FTC's commissioner rules the CD-R's dispute


"...The Fair Trade Commission last week ruled that three foreign companies: Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands, Japan's Sony Corp and Taiyo Yuden Co. did not violate Taiwan's fair trade law on the dispute over licensing fees with local recordable compact disc (CD-R) manufacturers. Commission spokesperson Chen Yu said that the commission will not intervene in the ongoing negotiations between licensing companies and CD-R makers.

If makers still believe that licensing companies illegally monopolize the market after the negotiation, they will need to provide further evidence and submit it to the commission. In January, the commission ruled that the three companies broke the law by acting jointly in CD-R patent licensing agreements by refusing to provide local makers with important trading information. The three companies were fined NT$8 million, NT$4 million and NT$2 million respectively..."
