PortalPlayer Introduces Products to Bring MP3 Recording to Portable Devices


"...PortalPlayer today introduced a new digital chip and software product suite that will enable consumer electronics manufacturers to build audio systems that do not need a PC to record MP3 music files.

The Tango Digital Media Platform includes the industry's first low power, single-chip system to support MP3 audio encoding for direct compression of music and voice content without a PC, making it ideal for battery-operated personal stereos and other compact system designs. It also supports multiple decoding formats, enabling manufacturers to produce systems that let end-users access a much broader range of content compared to currently available, single-format devices.

PortalPlayer also provides its customers with all of the technology needed to build systems compliant with specifications defined by the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SMDI, www.sdmi.org). This is a 180-member industry group developing open technology specifications that protect the playing, storing, and distributing of digital music..."
