New HEVC Patent Pool Launched

GE, Technicolor, Dolby, Philips and Mitsubishi Electric have formed HEVC Advance, a licensing administrator company for the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression standard.

The HEVC Advance patent pool will be an additional licensing option of HEVC essential patents. The company expects that more than 500 essential patents will be available for license at launch.

"The market is requiring a different approach to aggregating and making HEVC essential patents available for license. We invite other HEVC patent holders to join the HEVC Advance pool, " said HEVC Advance representative Peter Moller.

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a new industry standard for video compression. Online service providers, such as OTT (over the top) content and mobile video, benefit from HEVC’s reduced burden on the network and video congestion. Traditional services, such as broadcast, satellite and cable providers, benefit from improved performance at lower transmission rates and the ability to deliver more content per channel.

HEVC Advance did not unveil royalty rates and licensing terms, and promised to offer more information in the second quarter. The HEVC Advance patent pool will formally launch in the third quarter of 2015.

MPEG LA, LLC is also offering a HEVC Patent Portfolio License since last September. The list of current patent holders to MPEG LA’s HEVC Patent Portfolio License include Apple; Fujitsu Limited; Hitachi Maxell,; JVC KENWOOD; NEC; Samsung Electronics and many more companies and technology institutes.
