Google Developing Project Tango 3D Table - report

The WSJ is reporting that Google is developing a new 7-inch tablet that can capture 3-D images, with the first prototypes to appear by next month.

The device will have two back cameras, infrared depth sensors and advanced software that can capture precise three-dimensional images of objects, according to the Journal.

It will be part of Google's 'Project Tango' project, which has been developing technology surrounding 3D imagery. Specifically, Project Tango is an Android platform for mobile devices designed to track 3D motion and objects, creating a map in real-time of the environment.

A prototype smartphone containing Project Tango 3D technology was released in February. The 5-inch smartphone was fitted out with a 4MP camera, two computer vision processors, integrated depth sensing and a motion-tracking camera. The camera enabled the phone to detect and record over a quarter of a million 3D measurements every second, updating orientation in real-time and creating a map which replicated the user's environment.

According to the report, Google will release a small number of tablets to developers first, in the same manner as Google Glass.

Google has not provided any comment.
