New AMD Radeon HD 7790 Graphics Card Promises Cooler 1080p Gaming

AMD today announced its Radeon HD 7790 mid-range graphics card, positioned to fill a gap in between the Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition, and the Radeon HD 7850.

The card is based on the new 28 nm "Bonaire" silicon and features 896 stream processors based on the Graphics CoreNext architecture, dual-independent tessellation units, 56 TMUs, 16 ROPs, and a 128-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 1 GB of memory. It's core runs at 1.00 GHz, and memory at 6.00 GHz, with a memory bandwidth of 96 GB/s.

In addition, the HD 7790 features the company's updated dynamic clock adjustment technology, designed to reduce the card's power draw. Powertune is an automatic and intelligent mechanism that optimizes the clockspeed of the GPU for higher clockspeeds and higher framerates in your games. It accomplishes this by assessing the workload of whatever application you're running, predicting what kind of performance will be demanded, then adjusting the parameters of the chip. The new version of AMD PowerTune technology brings additional intelligence to the table, and can now optimize voltages for efficient power consumption. That efficient power consumption allows AMD to bring even higher clockspeeds to a product like the AMD Radeon HD 7790 GPU. AMD designed to run the AMD Radeon HD 7790 GPU at 1000MHz on a single 6-pin power connector. Many of AMD's partners will take even greater advantage of these new capabilities with a second power connector and even higher clockspeeds.

AMD's reference card is powered by a 6-pin power connector and its TDP is rated at 85W.

Display outputs include one or two DVI connectors, and one each of HDMI and DisplayPort.

AMD is targeting a price-point of $149.99.

AMD claims that the Radeon HD 7790 GPU offers an average performance advantage of up to 20% over Nvidia's GTX 650 Ti. According to the first reviews that have appeared online, the Radeon HD 7790 is offering 80% of the 7850?s performance and more than double the performance of the 7770. Meanwhile against NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 650 Ti, AND 's latest offering seems to have a 12% performance advantage - at least for not overclocked GTX 650 Ti's.

AMD is also extending its Never Settle Reloaded program to the AMD Radeon HD 7790. When you purchase this new graphics card at a participating retailer, you will receive a free copy of BioShock Infinite valued at $59.99 USD.
