LG Unveils CINEMA 3D SMART TV Line-Up at CES 2012

LG will unveil 3D products athe the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, led by the 55-inch 3D OLED TV and the 84-inch 3D Ultra Definition (UD) TV.

"The 3D and Smart TV revolution is just beginning and LG is committed to convincing consumers the world over that these technologies are the future, not just a fad," said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "We will once again showcase the excellence of CINEMA 3D, which has become the global standard for 3D. CES also presents a meaningful opportunity for us, as our CINEMA 3D Smart TVs strive to achieve the global No. 1 market share."

Large-Screen CINEMA 3D Smart TVs

LG will unveil a wider range of large-screen CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, spanning between 55 and 84 inches.

At the CINEMA 3D Experience zone, CES visitors will receive LG's latest CINEMA 3D glasses, which employ new designs, including curved lenses. Visitors can use a single pair of CINEMA 3D glasses to browse through a LG's 3D products, including CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, 3D monitors, 3D notebooks and 3D projectors.

Visitors to LG's 3D Game zone will experience 3D gaming via a range of 3D monitors connected to Microsoft's XBox Kinect. The new 3D monitors have been optimized for gaming, as evidenced in Dual Play, which allows two gamers to simultaneously play the same game on a single monitor without having to split the screen.

Also at CES this year, LG has prepared a room, where visitors can experience LG's 3D sound technology through LG's new home theater system. Viewers can feel 3D movements through the sound, as the sound output is synchronized with the movement of various on-screen objects.

Smart TV: Upgrade of NetCast, LG's Proprietary Smart TV Platform

LG claims that it Smart TV function offers access to 1,200 apps and a range of content services. NetCast, LG's own Smart TV platform, has been upgraded and an integrated search function has been added to allow easier access to content. In turn, popular search words can be used to search through LG's expansive Smart TV ecosystem. In addition to basic communication functions, social networking services (SNS) on LG's Smart TV now permit users to "share" and "like" what they're watching. NetCast will be the platform in approximately 60 percent of LG's flat-panel TVs introduced this year.

Another advancement in user convenience is the new Magic Remote. In addition to the familiar Point control mode, the new Magic Remote allows three additional modes: Voice Recognition, Magic Gesture and Wheel. Combined, the four control modes facilitate a more natural navigation and browsing. For instance, when performing searches, users no longer have to punch in each individual letter through on-screen menus, as Voice Recognition allows users to simply speak into the Magic Remote.

In addition, LG showed a camera accessory, similar to the Microsoft Kinect, that connects to the TV and allows for 3D gesture recognition.

It seems like TV makers had Apple in mind when designing the latest batch of smart TVs, especially in the area of device interactivity. It is apparent that at least some of these new capabilities may have been developed to compete with Apple?s possible entry into the TV market in late 2012 or 2013, as suggested by industry chatter.

At CES 2012, LG will unveil the Google TV. LG Smart TV with Google TV combines the familiarity of Google's Android OS with the convenience and comfort of LG's 3D and Smart TV technologies.

LG Smart TV with Google TV is easy to use, due to the combination of an Android-based user interface and Magic Remote Qwerty designed by LG, which combines the benefits of LG?s Magic Remote with a QWERTY keyboard.

The CINEMA SCREEN Design is featured in middle- and high-end 3D TVs from LG that will be launched during the first quarter of 2012. The CINEMA SCREEN Design reduces the bezel of 3D TVs to just one millimeter.

55-inch 3D OLED TV

LG claims that its OLED TV picture is superior to other OLED TVs thanks to its 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner, which work together to generate natural and accurate colors. The 4-Color Pixels feature allows for more accurate color depiction by using a set of four colors (red, green blue and white) in comparison to the RGB setup used by other OLED TV manufacturers. Color Refiner ensures consistency in colors from a wider viewing angle via an LG algorithm which improves and refines hues and tones.

LG's OLED TV also exhibits an infinite contrast ratio and are 1,000 times faster than LED/LCD displays.

LG's 3D OLED TV is equipped with LG's Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) CINEMA 3D technology. LG claims that FPR-type 3D TVs cause less eye strain, while FPR-type 3D glasses are far lighter than active shutter 3D glasses.

The 3D OLED TV weighs a mere 7.5kg.

In contrast to LG's rival Samsung's RGB color approach for its 55" OLED TV - Samsung emphasized that it is using RGB color patterning, meaning that it has made progress on organic material deposition techniques - LG's white OLED uses a color filter method.

84-inch 3D UD TV

LG's 3D UD TV boasts superb picture quality on an 84-inch display panel. With 8 million pixels and four times the resolution clarity (3840x2160) of existing Full HD TV panels, the 3D UD TV provides the most convincing 3D viewing experience currently available outside of a movie theater.

It features LG's Slim and Narrow Bezel Design as well as 3D Depth Control, which allows users to control the 3D effect. In addition, the 3D Sound Zooming provides users with 3D sound that rivals home theater systems, according to LG.

Via the display panel, users can access LG's Smart TV ecosystem, which comprises over 1,200 apps and gives users access to premium content services such as the 3D Zone where viewers can select from a wealth of 3D movies. The imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expands the availability of 3D content. Users can browse and navigate the Smart TV ecosystem using LG's new, Magic Remote, which now recognizes four different types of command input: Voice Recognition, Wheel, Magic Gesture and Point.

3D IPS Monitors

LG will also unveil several series of 3D IPS monitors featuring viewing angles of 178 degrees without any changes in color or sacrifice in color consistency.

The 27-inch DM92 series leads LG's 3D IPS monitor line-up. With the application of LG's CINEMA SCREEN Design, the DM92 series is equipped with a bezel that is just one millimeter wide. Additionally, the 3D IPS monitors consume roughly 25 percent less energy compared to existing IPS monitors.

The 23-inch DM82 series exhibits a chic design, employing a metallic neck supported by a square, slim base. LG says that the 3D display quality is among the industry's best, with superior color tone from any viewing angle. Other features include 7-watt built-in speakers.

The 27- and 23-inch DM52 series offers efficiency in a flexible package. Combining 3D with IPS, the DM52 series comes equipped with a range of connectivity features, such as HDMI and USB, for content-sharing with external devices.

Optimized for 3D, LG's D43 monitor offers a host of new technologies and features. The monitor promises bright 3D images as well as SUPER Resolution and vivid colors through the 3D effect mode. The D43 converts 2D content into 3D without any additional software. A 3D hot key enables users to adjust and control the depth of 3D images.

LG's new 2012 IPS monitor line-up will be available globally starting February 2012.
