eBay Launches Open Commerce Ecosystem, Partners With Facebook

At its Innovate Developer Conference 2011, eBay Inc. unveiled X.commerce, an open commerce ecosystem focused on arming developers and merchants with the technology tools needed to define the future of commerce.

"We expect technology to change commerce more in the next three years than in the past 15," said John Donahoe, President and CEO, eBay Inc. "This creates a tremendous global opportunity for developers and merchants alike. With X.commerce we?ve created an open ecosystem that is the most complete set of commerce capabilities on the planet. Through X.commerce, developers will be the driving force behind the next wave of retail innovation."

X.commerce brings together the technology assets and developer communities of eBay, PayPal, Magento and partners, to further expand on eBay Inc.'s mission of enabling commerce. The companies said that the X.commerce will give developers and merchants all the technologies necessary for commerce in an open and accessible format ? from shopping carts, to payment services, inventory management, marketplace integrations, tax management and beyond.

The X.commerce ecosystem contains an open commerce operating system, X.commerce Fabric. Via the X.commerce Fabric, developers will be able to distribute their work directly to the merchants currently in the Magento, eBay and PayPal merchant portfolio.

Merchants will be able to deploy and integrate tools ranging from demand generation to merchandising, transactions (payments, identity, fulfillment), business management (analytics, customer service) and more.

Facebook and eBay Inc. will integrate Facebook's new Open Graph functionality - the map of connections that Facebook users create with friends and online content - into online commerce experiences through Magento and GSI. This will allow developers to build new social shopping experiences for consumers and retailers.

In addition to Facebook partners, including Adobe, Kenshoo, Outright and CIGNEX Datamatics have recognized the value proposition of X.commerce and have joined the ecosystem right out of the gate.

Adobe's Digital Marketing platform will bring analytics to X.commerce merchants, helping them understand their customers' habits.

Kenshoo helps merchants of all sizes create automated digital marketing campaigns that drive demand to their businesses.

Outright offers an online bookkeeping tool for merchants, which helps them manage everything from accounts receivables to year-end taxes.

CIGNEX Datamatics helps clients worldwide implement Open Source ecommerce solutions that integrate with other technologies, quickly and cost-effectively.

An eBay Mobile iOS SDK will be available soon to developers in the X.commerce ecosystem who have an eBay Developer Program account. The iOS SDK will contain APIs to help developers build mobile apps specifically designed to enhance the eBay selling and buying experiences.

A wide range of technology assets was also added in the eBay portfolio to the X.commerce ecosystem, including Magento, RedLaser, Milo, and Zong. These new technologies combined with existing assets from eBay and PayPal will offer new commerce capabilities to merchants and developers.

X.commerce is available today. Basic use is free to registered users. Developers can download the X.commerce developer package at www.x.com.

PayPal and X.commerce also today introduced PayPal Access, a new commerce identity system that makes it safer for consumers to shop across the web without having to remember multiple passwords.

Available to global retailers today, PayPal Access gives consumers the ability to sign up and sign in to participating websites with just their PayPal usernames and passwords.

PayPal Access provides everything consumers and merchants need to create an account and complete a transaction ? including user verification, shipping information, and payment details.
