Apple's App Store Downloads Top 15 Billion

Apple claims that over 15 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store by the more than 200 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users worldwide.

The App Store offers more than 425,000 apps and developers have created an array of over 100,000 native iPad apps.

The App Store includes games, business, news, education, sports, health, reference and travel aps. Apple said that it has paid developers over $2.5 billion to date.

Judge denies exclusivity of "App Store" term

In related news, a California court denied Apple's motion for a preliminary injunction on Amazon.com's use of the term "Appstore" in a trademark infringement case on Wednesday.

Apple had exclusive use of "App Store" when it launched its service a little over three years ago, and spent a great deal of money in advertising and publicity, but the term appears to have been used more widely by other companies as time has passed, the said.

There is no evidence that Amazon intended to create an association between its Android apps and Apple's apps, and there is no evidence of actual association, the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California said.

Apple filed the suit in March against Amazon's use of Appstore for its online store of applications for devices using the Android mobile operating system.
