AMD Launches New Platforms for Embedded Systems, New ATI FirePro Professional Graphics

AMD today announced two new complete platforms for the embedded market, the ASB2 and the AM3 platforms, as well as the new ATI FirePro V7800, ATI FirePro V5800, ATI FirePro V4800, and ATI FirePro V3800 professional graphics cards.

New Platforms for Embedded Systems

At Embedded Systems Conference today, AMD announced two new complete platforms for the embedded market, the compact ASB2 platform and the high-performance AM3 platform, that offer many combinations of power and performance with up to 74 percent improvement in performance-per-watt over previous generations, AMD said.

AMD?s new embedded platforms consist of chipset and graphics solutions along with high-performance CPUs as low as 8W TDP.

"The barriers to widespread adoption of x86 in the broad embedded market have traditionally been a combination of power, price and the physical footprint of the silicon," said Buddy Broeker, director, Embedded Solutions Division, AMD. "AMD's embedded solutions have been steadily driving down those barriers while adding enterprise-class performance and features that may not have been readily available to designers in the past. Our commitment to the embedded market grows stronger as we look to a future introduction of AMD Fusion technology products into the embedded space."

New Platform Features

- Faster memory with support for 2 channels DDR3
- Improved I/O for high-throughput and real-time applications with available HyperTransport 3.0 technology
- ECC for high-reliability applications like SMB/SOHO storage systems

- Multiple CPU options that offer wide choice of performance and power
Power envelopes in 8, 12, 15, 25, 45, and 65 watts TDP
Single-, dual- and quad-core
Up to 2.8 GHz

- AMD 785E chipset with support for PCI Express 2.0
- New ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics with DirectX 10.1, full 1080p display resolution support, HDMI, and power-savings capability with options to support multiple displays - Socket AM3 package, compatible with socket AM2 when using DDR2 memory
- Lidless BGA package offers low-cost to manufacture, high reliability, and low z-height for small form factors and fan-less designs

Previously, if you needed two high-performance 64-bit cores operating under 15 watts, the only game in town was the relatively pricey (ultra low voltage) Intel Core 2 Duo processors like the 1.06 GHz U7500 or 1.2 GHz SU9300. There is now an alternative with the new platform with either an AMD Athlon II Neo or AMD Turion II Neo processors. Available in 12W, 1.3 GHz form and 15W, 1.5GHz trim, the new ASB2 dual cores offer ULV-class TDP, along with features like ECC memory support and dual channel DDR3 on-chip memory controllers, at fraction of the price point commanded by competitive ULV chips.

These processors, when paired with the ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics engine in the 785E chipset, mean that low power solutions no longer have to be costly or performance-compromised. iBASE will be offering two ASB2-based products in the near term. The first will be the IB889 3.5" Single Board computer with a full array of graphical output support (DVI, CRT and LVDS) along with a miniPCIe(x1) slot for wireless connectivity. Both iBASE ASB2 products can be specified with single or dual core processors from 8 to 25 watts.

At the low end Quixant will deliver the QXi-100 product. The QXi-100 demonstrates excellent thermal characteristics in a compact package thanks to AMD?s ASB1 platforms with the AMD Sempron and AMD Athlon X2 processors. The QXi-100 also provides dual-screen graphics capabilities thanks to the RS780E chipset, which integrates high performance ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics.

At the mid- to high-end, Quixant offers the QX-30. This platform harnesses the power of both AM2-and AM3-based processors to give a broad range of CPU options, from single-core through quad-core. The RS780E chipset is again utilised for its graphics capabilities. However, the QX-30 also has an on-board ATI Radeon E2400 discrete GPU. This enables the QX-30 to drive up to four independent DVI monitors, utilising a single unified video driver and simple common display settings.

New ATI FirePro Professional Graphics

Following the launch of the ATI FirePro V8800, AMD also today introduced new additions to its next-generation ATI FirePro family - ATI FirePro V7800, ATI FirePro V5800, ATI FirePro V4800, and ATI FirePro V3800 - offering professionals in the digital content creation (DCC) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) industries performance and features at every price point. AMD also announced the ATI FirePro 2460 Multi-View, a low profile, quad display graphics solution designed for financial institutions. These latest ATI FirePro solutions are expected to be available from HP, CDW, New Egg, Tiger Direct and other online retailers.

Each card supports Microsoft DirectX11, OpenGL 4.0 and OpenCL along with ATI Eyefinity technology.

High-end: With 2GB of GDDR5 memory, the ATI FirePro V7800 offers high performance capabilities and visual quality in a compact single slot form factor. Its parallel architecture can handle computationally or visually demanding applications without negatively impacting performance. With ATI Eyefinity technology, professionals can drive up to three independent 30" displays at one time.

Mid-range: The ATI FirePro V5800 offers professionals a balance of price and performance. Featuring 1 GB of GDDR5 memory, and support for up to three independent displays through ATI Eyefinity technology, the ATI FirePro V5800 delivers more than double the performance capability of the previous generation.

Entry-level: The ATI FirePro V4800 features 1GB of GDD5 memory and delivers 1.25X the performance capability compared to the previous generation. With 512 MB of DDR3 memory and a 30-bit display pipeline that offers accurate color reproduction and high visual quality, the ATI FirePro V3800 brings dramatic performance and up to three display support through ATI Eyefinity technology to entry-level 3D graphics professionals.

The ATI FirePro 2460 Multi-View is a low profile, quad display graphics solution designed to improve the visual experience for financial traders while simultaneously helping to reduce power and cooling costs for some of the largest financial institutions. With an average board power consumption of 13W, ATI FirePro 2460 is designed to meet the performance and productivity requirements of enterprise environments without increasing the power consumption needs of users while offering the capability to support multi-monitor ATI Eyefinity technology.
