Seagate Ships First 2TB 6Gb/s SAS Enterprise Drive

Seagate is now shipping its 3.5-inch Constellation ES drive, the first 2TB enterprise-class drives featuring 6Gb SAS.

Designed specifically for multi-drive nearline storage environments, the Constellation ES drive are promising to offer the highest capacities with increased power efficiency, enterprise-class reliability, and data security.

The fourth-generation, 3.5-inch Seagate Constellation ES drive family for 7200-RPM enterprise environments enables efficient storage with capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. Supporting up to 76TB per square foot, it offers high reliability, 6Gb/s SAS or SATA 3Gb/s performance, PowerChoice optimized power and cooling technology, and a government-grade security option.

Constellation ES drives offer the world?s highest capacity at 2TB while providing enterprise robustness for Tier 2/nearline environments. They are differentiated from 3.5-inch desktop drives by offering enterprise-class reliability and superior data integrity with a UER of 1E10-15. Enterprise-class rotational vibration tolerance provides robust protection from chassis and fan vibrations (RV 12.5 rad/sec 20 to 1500Hz). The drives are offered with either a 3-Gb/s SATA interface or a 6-Gb/s SAS 2.0 interface for superior data protection at industry-leading speeds, along with optional power saving modes with PowerChoice.

The new drives feature an enhanced rotational vibration tolerance for continuous data access, efficiencies with PowerChoice host-selectable power options for savings (up to 35 percent) during slow or idle periods as well as a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) option for TCG-compliant/AES-128 security cuts.
