HTC Developing "Touch" for CDMA

Good News for Sprint and/or Verizon Customers in the US

A few weeks ago, HTC, Corp. launched a smartphone called the HTC Touch, a device whose fingertip-oriented control system invites comparison to Apple's iPhone.

This model can only be used with wireless carriers that use the GSM standard. This allows the device to be used with most carriers around the world, but not those that use the CDMA standard, such as Sprint and Verizon.

Fortunately for these companies' customers, HTC has revealed that it is developing a CDMA version of this device.

Additional Features

Called the HTC Vogue, this smartphone will offer all of the features of the GSM version, but also include some additional ones.

Possibly the most significant of these is support for 3G cellular-wireless networking. The Vogue will offer EV-DO Rev.A, while the fastest standard the Touch supports is EDGE, a 2.5G networking standard.

In addition, the upcoming version of this smartphone will have a built-in GPS receiver, but its predecessor does not.

More Details on the HTC Vogue

Like other devices, the Vogue will run Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 Professional, but include a new way of controlling touchscreen-based devices developed by HTC called TouchFLO. Like the iPhone, this model will be capable of recognizing and responding to the sweep of a finger across the screen. This will allow users to launch applications without a stylus.

The all-important touchscreen will be 2.8 inches and have a 320-by-240-pixel (QVGA) resolution.

In addition to its 3G capabilities, the Vogue will have Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0.

It will include 128 MB of RAM (twice as much as the Touch) and 128 MB of ROM. It will also have a slot for microSD cards.

In addition, a 2.0 megapixel camera will be part of this device.

Availability?

It is not known if any of the CDMA carriers are intending to offer the HTC Vogue, or when this will happen.

The GSM version of this smartphone will be available in North America this fall; it is already on sale in Europe.
