Samsung Claims World's Fastest Graphics Chip

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it has developed a fourth generation of 512-Mbit graphics double data rate (DDR) DRAM chip that is the fastest graphics memory chip in the world.

According to Samsung, the new double data rate graphics memory chip, or "GDDR4," is designed with 80-nanometer process technology and can process data at 12.8 gigabytes per second, about 30 percent faster than existing products.

Samsung Electronics said that a 512-megabyte version of the chip will be capable of downloading six high-definition movie files in a mere second.

Graphics memory chips are installed in desktop PCs, notebooks and workstations separate to main computer memory to allow the management of huge volumes of video images.

Samsung?s early debut of the GDDR4 512-Mbit DRAM chip is expected to give an edge over rivals, allowing it to retain more than 80 percent of the world?s GDDR4 DRAM chip market, although that market is at an early stage of development.

The company said it plans to commence mass production of the new product next month.
