Toshiba Tops Global Market Share in Consumer Electronics Hard Disk Drives

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) topped HDD manufacturers in consumer electronics (CE) HDD shipments for the third quarter of 2005, according to research firm IDC.

According to IDC, in Q3, Toshiba had a global market share of 27.5 percent for all HDDs shipped into CE, and an impressive 43.9 percent share when excluding the 3.5-inch drive category.

Toshiba has been first-to-market on mobile HDD products, including announcement and shipment of PMR drives. Toshiba's 1.8-inch PMR HDD set new records in areal density by boosting the capacity of a single 1.8-inch platter to 40 gigabytes. The company also claims the world's smallest HDD at 0.85 inches and has led the HDD industry in pioneering storage technologies for the automotive market.
