HLDS and TSST cut OEM prices for 8x slim-type DVD burners

Hitachi-LG Data Storage and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology have reduced their OEM quotations for 8x slim-type DVD burners from US$78-80 to US$70, according to the Taiwan-based makers.

Quanta Storage, the largest producer of slim-type optical disc drives (ODDs) in Taiwan, and Lite-On IT, Taiwan?s largest maker of half-height ODDs, ship much smaller volumes of slim-type DVD burners than HLDS and TSST, but the two companies are ambitious to compete for orders in the segment. Local makers suggested the price cuts from HLDS and TSST are meant to ward off competition from Taiwan.

Quanta Storage and Lite-On IT declined to comment on the news.
