AMD releases new prices for socket-754 Semprons

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) yesterday released new prices for its socket 754 Sempron processors, with prices sliding 5-10%. The new prices went into effect on May 2.

AMD?s price cuts are aimed to accelerate its K8 CPUs? adoption in the entry-level market, said motherboard makers. First-tier motherboard makers may soon begin marketing Socket-754 K8 models with an FOB (free on board) price of less than US$50, down about 5%, the makers believe.

As the AMD may begin being phased out after the second quarter, AMD will mainly market its socket-939 Athlon 64 processors for the high-end and mainstream segments, while socket-754 Semprons will occupy the entry-level segment, motherboard makers commented.

In related news, the AMD socket M2 platform with 1207 pins, should hit the market in 2006, the makers expect.
