Elpida to shift key memory chip operations to Taiwan

Elpida Memory Inc, a joint venture created in 1999 by NEC Corp and Hitachi Ltd, will shift its memory chip assembly and testing operations to two firms in Taiwan as early as fiscal 2007, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Wednesday.

The report said the move marks the first time that a major Japanese chipmaker will shift all of the latter stages of production overseas.
