Nvidia ships mobile GeForce 6800

Nvidia today introduced its latest mobile graphics chip - the first GeForce 6-class notebook-oriented GPU.

The GeForce Go 6800 provides fill DirectX 9 acceleration - including Shader Model 3.0. The chip supports DDR graphics memory clocked at up to 300MHz, Nvidia said, and DDR 2 or G-DDR 3 SDRAM at 600MHz, all across a 256-bit memory interface.

Nvidia claims the Go 6800 has a fill-rate of 3.6bn texels per second and can process 100m vertices a second - just over half and one-sixth, respectively, of the figures the company quotes for the desktop 6800.

Alongside its 3D capacilities, the Go 6800 sports PureVideo, an on-chip video processing system the provides MPEG and Windows Media 9 Hi-Def. video decoding acceleration. It will also hasten encoding MPEG HD content.

The GeForce Go 6800 is available now for consumers in notebooks from Sager, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Voodoo PC, Prostar and MV, Nvidia said. Other manufacturers are expected to announce GeForce Go 6800 based notebooks shortly, it added.
