What do the DS, CS, and SP jumper settings do on a Quantum ATA hard drive?

The DS jumper is the most common setting used to configure the drive as the master ATA device on the bus. It should be installed if your drive is to be the main boot device on the primary ATA bus, or if it is to be the master device on the secondary ATA bus of an enhanced ATA controller.

Some of Quantum's earlier ATA drives have an SP jumper position. The SP jumper is used to tell the master drive that a slave drive is present on the cable. This jumper should only be installed on your Quantum master drive if the slave drive does not support the Drive Active/Slave Present (DASP) signal. In a case where the slave drive is not recognized (or does not support this signal), the SP jumper would be installed in addition to the DS jumper. This jumper position is rarely used today and typically is only required to support older model IDE/EIDE drives installed as slave devices.

The CS jumper is defined as Cable Select, this is an option where the position of the drive on the cable determines the drive's ID [C: or D:]. In these situations both the master and slave drive will have their jumper settings set to CS. However, using this setting requires a special type of cable to be installed in your system.

Please refer to the documentation provided with your system or ATA controller to determine if you need to use a cable select configuration. On systems or controllers that support Ultra ATA-66 or Ultra ATA-100 data transfers, the use of a 80-conductor Ultra-ATA cable is required. Ultra ATA cables are typically configured for cable select operation.
