I get VXD file errors while running Windows. What causes this?

Error messages referencing a .386 or .VXD file, can in some cases appear during booting up of your system within the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows ME operating systems. According to Microsoft, these errors can occur if the specific file is damaged. These files can be referenced by the SYSTEM.INI file, the registry, or by VMM32.VXD. These errors are not related to the operation of your hard drive, but rather to the operation of the specified program. Windows 2000 and Windows NT do not generate VXD errors, but rather a blue screen will appear when such errors occur. There will also be an error number generated.
