I'm looking at buying an LG GSA-4163, but I can't find any reviews on it. Does anyone know if it writes DVD-RAM, or what the CD read speed is?

Thanks
TJ

Man I've been waiting for that. Still wondering whether I should return my 4163 for a 3520 .

4163 is great, there is no need to return it. A friend of mine just got it and it is just great.

Well, so far it's been good in terms of speed, features and writing quality (at first). But then the first 4163 I had started spitting out discs with bad scans and transfer tests (granted the discs were still read perfectly on both my DVD players) after 3 weeks. So I'm still in the burn and see mode since the retailer has a 30 return policy. As for other drives like the 3520, DVD-R DL capability is certainly is a temptation (I'm not really a DVD-RAM kinda guy) .

You might got a defeactive unit. Also what scans did you perform?

Yes, it's the unit, but that kinda raise doubts about it's reliability. My second unit works fine and if it continues that way I'll probably keep it. I was running CDSpeed transfer and disc quality scans on a Liteon drive btw.

The 3520 seems to be great and NEC at least tried to improve the reading issue. I cannot tell you to wait for the LG review but according to another thread this supposed to be released this week. Maybe it is worthy butit still depends on you. Can you return the drive within a specific date?

I have untill this Saturday. This unit still has PI spike at the same place but it isn't as bad (no massive PIF spikes so far), but if nothing goes wrong I'll probably keep it. If I get the 3520 it'll have to be from regular computer dealers, so no 30 day money back guarantees .

PI spike, where, in Kprobe? If yes this is a Mediatek chipset's bug.

Not Kprobe, just CDSpeed. The problem with Kprobe is that it only works well with Liteon DVD writers, with readers it can't control the read speed,
