Email management solution developer Vircom Inc. (vircom.com) announced on Wednesday that it has released a white paper titled Scam Prevention Guide - How to recognize a phish when you see one. The document, the second volume in its series on exposing email-borne fraud, offers an explanation on the origin of phishing attacks and advice on how to avoid them. Phishing attacks have escalated into a significant source of email fraud today with a reported 1500 active phishing Web sites and 51 instances of brand spoofing in November 2004 alone, according to the Anti-Phishing Working Group. Imposters use spoofed emails that appear authentic, as well as Web sites, to dupe unsuspecting victims into giving out personal information for the purpose of financial fraud and identity theft.
"Vircom is committed to developing solutions to end phishing and other types of email-borne fraud," says Sylvain Durocher, president and founder of Vircom. "In conjunction, we are actively working to educate consumers on how to identify phishing scams and avoid becoming victims of online fraud."
