This is my first burn with my new Plextor 716A drive, TLA 0203, firmware 1.03. As you can see below, I am "EXTREMELY" pleased with the results, it looks beautiful!

I ordered one and will move my NEC ND-3500A to my wife’s PC. I have always had good luck with Plextor. I thought about the BENQ drive, but NewEgg doesn’t' have them anymore and all my other vendors are crazy on shipping costs (a little pet peeve of mine).

Only reason for going with it is the supported booktype feature in the product. Never thought I would need it, but having my folks out of the state and sending them xmas videos on DVD+R wasn't working. Their player wouldn't play it and their retired and "used to" their current DVD player.

Don't get me wrong the NEC is a good drive. I am just not comfortable using hacked firmware. I am expecting good results too from this Plextor drive.

LOL, not sure, but it's definately the chipset. PlexToolsPro removes the spike so you can't see it at all.

Okay, returned from best buy. Purchased 200 Fuji 8x DVD+R's (YUDEN0000) for about 29 cents a piece (very good price) with rebates.

Below is a full burn, Plextor 716A TLA 0203 firm 1.03 writing this 8X disc at 16x:

I LOVE this drive! I'm now taking the LiteOn's that I have and giving them away to my enemies.....! Glad I returned the BenQ, the quality wasn't this good, even with hacked firmware!

LiteON quality is a no-go situation, BenQ/Plextor are much better drives

I agree Emperor!

I sent LiteOn an email with the scans above from the Plextor, along with some trash scans from the 1633s and asked then when they are going to improve the writing quality, I will post their response, if they do respond.

I wouldn't bet much on their response, LiteON is making big steps backwards in terms of quality and features...

Billiz, it could be the different testing method, what looks OK at a LiteON burner, might look bad at a Plextor burner and via versa...

Combination of firmware, 1.03 and Drive TLA 0203. The results have been fantastic on all except one media that I have tested. Results are the same, when tested with PlexToolsPro as well... beautiful!

Should try the new 1j04 firmware (beta release -R DL), should now write 'properly' at 16X, not at 14X 'ish' like versions =<1.03. Some SUM8/SUM1 scans with PlexTools would be better though. Just out of curiosity, what is the place of manufacture for your unit?

Clint, it was manufactured in Japan.... Can I flash the firmware back if I don't like it? This is my first Plexwriter so I don't know if I can flash it back and forth or not...

I'll post a new scan with beta firmware if I can flash it back and forth.

Burns above were done with Plextor 716A Firmware 1j04 (Beta) at 16X on 8X media.

As you can see, it doesn't look like you can possibly get a better burn.... This Plexwriter is truly "amazing"
