AN31, AN32 are low quality, but are not "oddball" codes - the Liteon code list is rather short but the Liteon drives have the code - though that may just mean the drive knows what media it's making a coaster of... actually, I think the Liteon "3S" series sdrives began shown uncharacteristically ok results on AN31 in tests, as they normally do not like low grade DVD-R one bit! The NEC drives are likely to handle them, and I'd be surprised to find a drive that didn't know them in current firmware, with rotten results, maybe. You aren't mistakenly trying to use the clear protector, are you ... don't laugh, a friend of mine did precisely that, the first time they used a shrinkwrap pack. Also, if you have been repeatedly trying the top one, put the top one or two to one side, on a spare spindle or case, and try a different one - especially if it's a shrinkwrap, the outer one or two may be damaged.
