Remarks

1. Some sentences are with bad grammar, so forgive me :)
2. Some drives (LG 8162, MSI X48) don´t read all media at full speed, only when you activate High speed. For all tests High speed was enabled.
3. The drives were tested with different Mainboards/CPU´s (from AMD Duron 800 to Intel Pentium 4 2400), but that don´t matter, because every system was configured (almost) perfect, DMA was enabled in every case.
4. I didn´t make every single test with every drive, because I created some test-media later than the first tests I made.
5. I don´t remember all FW-versions of the drives, but I can say that I only use official FW, not hacked ones.
6. The test-results are fact, the end-conclusion is a little more subjective, because things like DAE-speed isn´t so important for me like for example reading protected data-disc´s. You can choose your own No. 1 with viewing the test-results.

6. Toshiba SD-M 1612: Duration 00:11:49, Average speed 1127 kBytes/s (6.41))

7. LG GDR 8162: Duration 00:13:05, Average speed 1018 kBytes/s (5.79)

LiteOn beats the competitors with a considerably distance to the AOpen. Toshiba 1912 and MSI still with an good performance. Toshiba 1612/1712 and LG have a poor performance with VCD.

Conclusion: LiteOn is the best drive for SVCD/VCD, the AOpen offers also a good performance. Toshiba 1612/1712 come with mixed results, MSI and Toshiba 1912 with average speed, LG is to slow to recommend.

Overall conclusion (in my opinion):

1. AOpen 1648AAP: I heard rumors that this drive is a rebadged Pioneer. Never been a fan of AOpen CD-RW-drives (I only say "Medium speed error"), but this drive is a great one. Fastest drive with protected data-media and with recordable/rewritable DVD-media. In other discipline´s not the fastest, but still faster than many competitors. This drive is not the quietest, but far away from noisy. Only negative point: It doesn´t support DVD-RAM.

2. LiteOn XJ-HD 166S: In the past I had bad experiences with many CD-Roms (short lifetime, noisy, bad DAE-quality) and CD-RW-drives (bad writing quality, also short lifetime)from LiteOn. But with the 166S LiteOn offers a very good drive when reading SVCD/VCD, recordable/rewritable DVD-media, data-media and protected data-media, it also support DVD-RAM. Negative points are the error-correction (2 from 3 drives I had have problems with scratched media, the most other drives I had had no problems), the poor CD-RW-speed and the noise level.

3. MSI X48: In many points not real fast, but rarely slow. Great performance with DVD-RAM-media. It´s also a good CD-writer with high quality burns with every media I used. The negative point is the poor error-correction with DVD-media, all my other drives do it better.

4. Toshiba SD-M 1712: Great performance with protected data-CD´s, CD-RW, SVCD and good performance with pressed DVD-media, supports DVD-RAM. It also is quiet and have short recognition-times for almost all media and a very good error-correction for DVD and CD. Negative points are the slow reading of recordable/rewritable DVD-media, Audio-ripping could be faster.

5. Toshiba SD-M 1612: Almost the same results like the 1712, but have problems with 99 Min-CD-R´s.

6. Plextor PX 116: It´s a rebadged Pioneer, but with Plextor´s own FW. I don´t have tested the drive with all media, so I don´t know the performance with recordable/rewritable DVD-media. The drive have good performance with Audio and data-CD´s, reads CD-RW and VCD/SVCD with an average speeds and seems to be overall a very reliable drive, the noise-level is also ok. Negative points. The price is higher than at other drives, the speed for protected data-CD´s is to slow for a Plextor, it doesn´t support DVD-RAM.

7. Toshiba SD-M 1912: It´s not a real Toshiba, it´s more like a Samsung. The speed for reading VCD was after all better than with earlier Toshiba-drives, the speed for recordable/rewritable DVD-media was improved, but that isn´t enough for a new drive because the competitors do it better. Positive point is the support for DVD-Ram and the relative low noise-level. I don´t really understand why this drives didn´t have the good properties from the original-Toshiba´s (Great speed with CD-RW, SVCD, protected data-media, short recognition-times) but some negative points like slow DAE-speeds didn´t removed from this drive.

8. Teac DV 516 (Rebadged Pioneer): I don´t have tested the drive with all media, so I don´t know the performance with recordable/rewritable DVD-media.It offers reat performance with CD, CD-R, Audio-CD and good performance with CD-RW. The CD error-correction is also good. Negative points: Noisy, average DVD-error-correction, slow with protected data-media, no DVD-RAM-support.

9. LG GDR 8162: Positive: Reads all types of media. Fast with pressed DVD´s, Audio-CD and data-CD. Good with CD-RW, average speed with recordable/rewritable DVD-media and protected CD-media, support DVD-RAM, the drive is also relative quiet. Negative: Very slow with SVCD/VCD, error-correction only average.

10. Pioneer DVD 117: Don´t forget, it´s only a 40x max. CD-drive. I don´t have tested the drive with all media, so I don´t know the performance with recordable/rewritable DVD-media. The drive have aver. performance with pressed CD´s and CD-R-media, is fast with pressed DVD-media. The speed for reading SVCD/VCD is also good. Negative points: Problems with recognizing recordable media, only 16x DAE-extraction, no support for DVD-RAM. It´s also very slow when reading protected CD-media.

If you had any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks Gabe_!

I just bought a Tositha SDM1912 from newegg because it is recomended by CDrlabs.com,which is its editor's choice.

From your test round,I guess it is not a best choice now.

Excellent Gabe_

There have been few reviews on DVD-ROM drives, so your roundup is most needed. You have already covered many aspects about the drives in depth. Will you consider doing some more tests that may not be of so much interest to you?

DS1A is over a year old. DS1E is the current firmware. Additionally, there are firmwares that remove the speed limits for recordable discs for LiteOn and Toshiba, but not for AOpen.

Thanks a lot Gabe_ for this colossal roundup

This is part of the solution for my needs in playing games with some comfort!

I'm afraid I have some questions considering the ability to read protected data-disc´s:

1/ Can we consider that all drives produced the same *good* image?
2/ Are all drives able to actually play the backup copy made by self? ( and by others??)
3/ Is the ASUS DVD-E616P2 or DVD-E616P1 ?

Current drives I miss in this test are LiteON SOHD-167T and Toshiba SD-M1802

I am no expert in protected disc backup, but as a user, I value more the fact of being able to play the copy of a game I buyed (and kept the original safe) without having to load tons of drivers or emulators that can be incompatible or problematic within my system.

I know for a fact that "Plextor PX 116" is not able to play the backup without emulation,
but that Toshiba drives are quite good (at least SD-M1402 and SD-M1612 for SD2.80) in this respect!
(I will test later on SD-M1502 and SD-M1712)

The fact of sparing some minutes in the copy is not so important for me as I, like everyone, do only *one* backup copy of each game , but I understand that having to burn so many copies to test the actual playing is impossible (and probably not legal!!!)

So a good solution would be for everyone having tried to play such backup without emulation to share their findings, as this would quickly identify those drives that work well in this respect, and make a valuable addition to this roundup

That's only my 2 cents, and
Thanks again Gabe_

Yes, would especially like to see it updated with the Aopen 1648/AAP Pro with both 1.00 and 1.01 firmware and also with scratched discs and poorly burnt discs (and maybe even scratched poorly burnt discs :-) )

Actually if you are making multiple copies of the same disc (which is illegal of course) there is no reason for you to read the disc lots of times, read it once and keep it. However, if you are backuping multiple discs the time does make a difference.

Personally, I don't really care about backuping discs. But if I did do it, it would make sense for me to backup as soon as I get the game. And as with many people, after buying or receiving a game I have been waiting for, I often want to play it ASAP. It would make a big diff for me whether it took 1h 30 mins or 12 mins to read the disc!

Thanks a lot, I´ll do my best

@muchin:

If I get new drives or new FW´s on the drives I had, I will make some tests.

@code65536:

I tested DS1E, the speed for all recordables DVD-media is not faster than with DS1A

@mardigan:

1. I never had problems with the images from Safedisc-protection. SD1 was generally no problem, SD2 and higher is only a problem of the writer.

2. Generally yes, but I heard some discussions that the AOpen has problems with newer SD2-protections, also with originals.

3. It´s the first Asus 616, made by Asus, not the rebadged Pioneer-drives like the P3 or P1

I don´t had the 167 because it is not able to read DVD-RAM, so I have buy one of the last 166S. The 167 seems to have problems with reading SD1/2 because it´s very slow. The 1802 isn´t on the market, it was avaible only for a short time.

I don´t have backups of new securom-protected Games, so I can´t test it.

I know that Pioneer and Pioneer-based-drives were(are?) able to play backups of some SD2-versions that not were 1:1-copies; other drives like the Toshiba CD-Rom 670-2B didn´t recognize the copies as originals.

Believe me, I´m doing the possible tests I can do, but can not test real all things :)

@Nil Einne:

If I get an AOpen AAP Pro I will do some tests.
A problem is that I had no one disc that was so poorly burnt enough to use it as test-media. If I get one, I´ll do the tests on the drives I had, but not at all I tested here.

Thanks for the reply gabe. Keep up the good work.

If you have any disks you don't want you could try making a scratched CD. Either leave it lying round on the table etc or maybe give it to your child (if you have one) to fool around with *grin*

As for poor burns this is more difficult. If you are willing to sacrifice a DVD, maybe try convincing your burner to burn it at too high a speed. This depends on your burner since not all of them allow you to burn at speeds the disc doesn't support well

Update for DVD-R, the real speed for the AOpen:

1. AOpen AAP 1648 FW .107: Start 4.75x, End 11.50x, Average 8.6x, Duration 6:56

Can it be that I can´t edit my thread?
