Hello to all...I have lurked here as a guest for while and just registered tonight. In Office Depot's most recent salespaper they advertise Maxell 4X DVD-R and 4X DVD+R media 50pk for $19.99. Are there any known issues with this media other than 4x instead of 8x burn speed? I am considering a purchase from the online link which also gives free shipping on orders over $50.

Ooops. This is a long link, don't you think? All the Maxell media I have use were very good. Some of them were Taiyo Yuden while the other MXL.

Thank you for your reply Iggy. Yes - the link IS long, but I just cut and pasted it as I have always done for any link....I guess we can thank Office Depot for the looooooong link.

I am not familiar with MXL....who are they? I take it from your post that they are good quality media as well?

FYI

When your confronted with a super long link like above, you can do this:

{url=http://www.this.is.your.long.link.here.com}Then what you type here will be what everyone see's{/url}

Of course, use brackets " [ ] " The above " { } " was just a sample.

Here is your super long link done this way:

Thank you for yor help jimr....

I checked the media tonite with dvd identifier and it is Hitachi Maxell Ltd. MXL RG02 with a nice canary yellow and silver top. It only burned at 4.6x on Alcohol 120% so it is kind of slow. I am undecided on whether to keep it or not. I have a NEC ND-3500AG burner. I probably will keep the media rather than go through the bother of returning it. It was only $21.40 for 50 discs incl. tax.

oooops...now neither my link nor yours works jimr.

I just want to say thx for this thread. I just got 50 of the Maxells for $19.99 and so far they are really good. Iv'e burned 3 DVDs and they burned @ 8X perfectly. One on Nero, one on Intervideo DVDcopy, and one on Clonedvd2. Nero took forever, but always does for me. I gave all three my movie "stress test". I play it on powerdvd and hit the next scene button all the way through the movie and back again. No hesitation on any of them. This "test" drives most of my burned dvds nuts.

You are most welcome....I am glad someone found this information to be of use. Iggy put my mind at ease about the likely good quality of these discs. If you don't mind my asking, what DVD Burner and firmware are you using to burn these at 8x ? I can only get 4.6x out of my NEC ND-3500AG using Alcohol 120%. I have not tried it with any other burning program yet. Thanks for the info you gave already.

I used a Lite-On SOHW 832S rev VSOE. I've had this burner about a month and I have noticed that it always burns at the rated speed. Never slower, but also never faster either. I have some old samsung 1X DVD-Rs that burned at 2X on a couple of old burners..only 1X on the 832S.

I take it from your reply that the Maxell blanks you purchased were actaully 8x media. Is this correct? If so, I am jealous, the ones I bought were only 4x rated media.

Mine is 8X. That's a bummer your is only rated 4X? Was it sold as 8X? Here's what my "smartburn" says about my Maxells..

Nominal Capacity = 3.83GB
Manufacturer Maybe = Maxell
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 8.0X (Write)

On the 832 using omnipatcher, you can safely burn that yellow/silver topped Maxell at 8x, I've done it to over 100 of those discs. My problem is my supplier ran out of them!!!! They are extremely high quality discs.

No, mine were marked as 4x media, which they are. Where did you buy yours? I got mine at Office Depot in Sailisbury North Carolina, USA. I am definitely jealous!

Mine are all marked 8X, they were the last ones in the store. I still expected the price to be wrong at checkout. I got them on the west side of Houston, Texas. I just checked their online store and the 8X aren't there anymore. The 4X is marked $79.97 for 50! Thx again for starting this thread, If I haddened gone by there on friday it would have been too late. I doubt we'll see a deal like that very often.
