I just got 100 Ridata 4x DVD+R media in. It seems that I didn't get the better media in order to burn faster...I have the nec 3500a with 2c8se firmare. I've burned 4 so far from this, and the first one it burned at 6x and then the rest at 3x, 3x, and 4x. I'm confused.

It seems to only want to burn at 3x speeds. Anyway to fix this or is it just limited by the media?
Also, when I use DVD Shrink, my ripping/compressing onto the harddrive seems to take around 8-12 minutes for no compressing and about 17-23 minutes for compressing. Is this normal?

2.8ghz w/ ht @ 800fsb
1gb Kingston Ram (dual channel)
80gb hd
9800 pro video card
nec 3500a

Its not the tip top of the line machine, but one that shouldn't hold me back at all either.

Thanks for the help. I know this is kinda of a media question, but its more geared at my drive and firmware....wanting to make sure I got the best for my setup.

This media can be burned up to 8X as the software reports. So the problem is not your drive. Do you have DMA enabled?

My PC is slower than yours and the performance better. When you say without compressing you mean just tranfers the data from one place to another? Since you have a single HD( with partision or not?) this might be your problem. What is the configuration of your IDE channels?

I have my harddrive as the Primary IDE Channel Properties, my NEC 3500a is the on the secondary IDE channel. Nothing else is on these IDE cables.

My harddrive is partitioned to 2 drives, 1 being mostly windows with extra room, and the other with storage on it.

I mean this: If I put in a DVD that can burn to 4.7g with NO compression, it takes faster of course to rip it to the HD. When I put in a DVD that is 8g or so and it compresses it to 4.7, it takes quite longer (round 25 mins).

OK DMA is enabled.

Good you have two partisions.

To tell you the truth the times you mention are a kind of increased. I have a P4 2.4Ghz 533FSB and I need approximately 18minutes for the compression process. If there is no compression less than 5 minutes.

Which HD do you have? Is it defragmented?

from what i've read, R03 burns at around 4x...occasionally 6 or 8 but mostly at 4x as rated. The other ones which is Ricoh01jpn can burn consistently at 8x...both are sold in bundle under Ritek or Ridata but you never knows what you'll get. Of course, you would hope to get the Ricoh ones....

oh and btw, I have the ridata (manuf code: ricoh01jpn) ones...burns at 8x..at least that's what Nero reported. I'm still trying to figure out how I can see the burning process "on the fly"....is this possible to find out?
