Recently a firmware from 1653S drive came up over codeguys, so we had the chance to test, if a 1633S can become a 1653S with good results...Why someone would like to do this? Cause 1653S has 12X P-CAV DVD-R writing strategy and 4X DVD+R DL, compared with the 8X Z-CLV DVD-R and 2.4X DVD+R DL of 1633S...

How you can start...Just download this file, it includes a windows flasher patched for 1633S and 1213s drives...

The 1653S supports 12X P-CAV DVD-R with RitekG05 based DVD-R media:

This is getting a bashing, quite literally, over at Cdfreaks!

Opinion seems to be that it "works", but the results are inferior to 1633S firmware (on a 1213S upped to 1653S).

Could be that the drive doesn't like being treated this way, could be typical early release Liteon firmware - rough!
There seems to be more hope for later firmware, or maybe the drive to learn the media (it may need the media learning reset in the EEPROM - using the new tool)

Mixed results, but then the Liteon has always favoured good quality +R media.

I also tried to OC as 1213s->1653S but the results were bad...

I need something new for PI/PO scans... Should I get LiteON or maybe Plextor? But I am afraid of getting Plextor because of all problems recently and their ignorance, also they like to forget older drives pretty fast. Firmware for my Premium hasn't been updated for a year or so and probably never will. LiteON can be ok with all firmware/community support but i really dont know which model should i get for PI/PO... bah, i am lost. :)
